Rose Care Throughout the Year
Do the following throughout the year: 5. Deadhead faded flowers.
1. Water as needed throughout the growing season. 6. Prune diseases growth & blind shoots.
2. Water wand for spider mites as needed. 7. Weed as needed.
3. Continue spraying for disease and thrips. 8. Tie & train climbing roses.
4. Disbud for larger flowers. 9. Apply supplemental fertilizers.

Spray with a fungicide/dormant oil (3 TB/gal)/spreader sticker combination – temperature above 50 deg and no wind
Remove/kill winter weeds.
Spade soil around rose bushes to be moved in February.
February:
Clean & sharpen tools.
Prepare beds for new bushes if not done previous fall.
Purchase fertilizers and sprays needed for the season.
Move any bushes to desired location while dormant (early Feb.)
March:
Plant bare-root roses Feb 15 – Mar 15.
Prune rose bushes (Except once bloomers) around mid-March weather permitting.
Remove weeds.
Spray rose bushes to prevent disease now and every 12-14 days until hard frosts have occurred in Nov or Dec.
Fertilize roses after pruning
Apply pre-emergent herbicide (Preen)
April:
Finish any March things not completed
Apply 2-3 inches of mulch after fertilizing
Mist flower buds and blooms only with Orthene every 3 days to prevent thrip damage.
May:
Plant potted roses.
Prune roses that only bloom in the spring after they have bloomed.
Continue to watch for spider mites.
June:
1. Plant container roses soon.
July:Fertilize as done in March.
Prune crossed and weak growth.
Collect Japanese beetles in a can of soapy water or spray with Sevin late in the day (to protect bees) if too numerous to collect
August:
Apply granular fertilizer for the last time this season. Liquids can be applied in September.
If you are showing roses in fall shows, begin pruning for show
September:
Our rose show: September 30
Plan & prepare rose beds for bushes you wish to plant next year
Apply liquid fertilizers only.
October:
Stop deadheading roses (3rd week in October). You may remove faded petals.
Evaluate rose bushes and plan for next year.
Enjoy the rose catalogs that arrive in the fall
Prepare new rose beds for next year’s roses.
November:
Order bare-root roses for planting next year. Schedule them to arrive during 2H Feb or 1H Mar. If you order, some choices may be sold out.
Plan & prepare rose beds for any new roses to be planted next year.
December:
After roses have become dormant (after several hard frosts) prune the rose bushes down to about 4 feet (except climbers) and remove any canes that cross against either other to lesson damage by winter winds. Tie climbers to their supports.
